Now offering extensions... Can we get a HELL YEAH?

Have you ever cut a tinnnny bit too much off and thought "OH F*CK!!!"

Have you considered extensions before?

It's DAMN overwhelming once you start researching... tapes, weaves, beads, invisitapes, glue... there are just so many different kinds of extensions.

My priority when I first started looking into extensions was that they were flat and light.

I had felt friends hair with extensions in and did not want anything bulky that stuck out too much and looked fake. I mean, you want people to look at your hair and be envious, not look at it and think 'trashbag'. Also, as a longtime sufferer of headaches and migraines, I did NOT want anything heavy stuck to my head for two months!

The second priority (yes, if I'm honest here) was the health of my hair.

After hearing so many horror stories, there was no way I was getting extensions that would snap my hair off.

So, tapes were The Ones. And I LOVED them. But there was no flexibility.

So, microtapes were The New Ones. And they are amazing!

The hair lasts 6-12 months (IF YOU LOOK AFTER IT - seriously, we cannot stress this enough), the application is quick and the results are dramatic.

We are currently trialling out a new range and the results so far have been incredible.

If you're interested in learning more about extensions, feel free to pop in or give us a call on 5243 9992 and we can tell you all you need to know.

We'll be posting photos over the next few weeks of clients' transformations as they come through.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes... New prices and a little thang called SalonPay

We have SOOOO much amazing stuff coming through at Tortoise & Hair Co. to make your life easier!!!

Firstly, we now have TIERED PRICING.

Although in business we do have to raise our prices from time to time to cover rent, product and wage increases, we now have several levels of stylists coming through the ranks that we are able to offer you at a lower price point to give you more options for your next appointment.

Here are our different levels:

  • MASTER STYLIST - These are our specialist salon gurus with a minimum of 5 years experience and a love of a challenge!
  • YOUNG GUN - Graduate stylists with a passion for hair and at least 2-5 years of experience under their belt
  • UP'N'COMER - Apprentices who are making waves and creating amazing hair.

(Every service also now has a $2 Green Fee that enables us to be a part of Sustainable Salons Australia in an effort to help create a more sustainable future for our industry, give back to the community and put an end to salon waste going in to landfill.)

Very soon, you will have 3 different ways of paying when you come to the salon!!!!!

  1. Cash or EFTPOS on the day of your appointment.
  2. Salon Membership payments direct debited weekly from your account - like a gym but without the sweat. Locked in VIP pricing and no need to budget.
  3. Apply for finance through the SalonPay app at the beginning of your appointment to only pay 25% on the day followed by 3 x easy fortnightly payments.

We've probably overloaded you with all that information, so if you have any questions at all or need to book in before the Christmas chaos, feel free to reply to this email, PM our Facebook page or give us a call on 5243 9992.

We hope to see you in the salon soon!!!

A Day of Beards...

Since starting the salon back in 2015, I have been so fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time and in turn, have met the most amazing people.

This was the case last year when I was styling hair at Ballarat Beat Rockabilly Festival and met those two legendary gents who introduced us to Barber's Choice Beard Oil and Moustache Wax... Brayden (the "Dark Bearded Man") and Jake (the "Red Bearded Man").

Not only have their oils been a fantastic addition to our product range in the salon, but this also meant that last year I had the honour of being asked to help out as a guest judge at Ballarat's Best Beard & Stache Competition.

Now... I have trimmed many a beard in my time and I certainly am an admirer of beards, however, to judge a beard competition I needed to LEARN about beard competitions.

Hello YouTube and episodes of "Whisker Wars".

Anyway, the competition was a success and I had an amazing day.

Fast-forward 12 months and we are now into the 2nd annual Ballarat's Best Beard & Stache Comp and again, I was lucky enough to be asked to come back as a judge. But this time, alongside comedy champs The Nelson Twins.

Today was the day. There was over 60 entrants, 4 categories and 3 winners from each.

Now what is involved in judging a beard? We have to score each participant from 1-10 on four different criteria in each category.

These criteria were a combination of colour, style, density, length, width, uniqueness, tidiness, etc, depending on whether the beard was competing in Manscaped (3" and under), Partial Beard, Moustache, or Full Beard Natural (the Holy Grail of beard comp categories).

Competition was stiff. Especially in the Full Beard category, which had over 30 entrants - all with EPIC beards!!!!

The trophies were absolute works of art too. As this event was a part of the Ballarat Heritage Weekend, they were handmade by the Sovereign Hill blacksmith, who did a truly incredible job!

Overall, the event was a huge success and I would truly love to thank the boys for having me!

Since today was a bit of a beard themed day, I thought it would be an opportune time to post some hand beard hints for those who may wish to get that facial hair going in time for next year's comp...

  • Be Patient - Everything worth doing in life requires time and patience... these are two things that are most definitely required when growing a beard. This is not the time to be impulsive or hasty!
  • Get Trims - Find a stylist/beard wrangler that you TRUST and have them keep your beard in check. Getting it shaped and keeping those ends in check may seem painful when all you want is a long beard, but I promise you - you will be better off for doing it!
  • Wash Regularly - Wash that beard. Not only does it catch food, but it can also cause some itching and dry skin underneath all of that facial hair canopy. You can get beard shampoos that will help alleviate this problem and soothe the skin below.
  • Oil. Oil. Oil. - I cannot recommend oiling your beard highly enough. We stock Barber's Choice. It is organic and locally made. Regular oiling helps condition and maintain the health of your beard, allowing you to help it reach it's full potential.
  • Comb It - Comb your beard and with a beard comb to help train it. This way you won't have as many issues getting it to sit how you like it.

Jodie will be joining the team permanently!!!

Time for the next announcement... Our guest stylist over the last month Jodie will be joining the team permanently!!!

Jodie has been hairdressing for 10 years. Throughout that time she has worked backstage at Sydney Fashion Week, managed a salon, and honed her skills as a colourist and stylist with many courses.

After having her gorgeous boy Archer (we're not being biased... look at that spunk) at the start of the year, Jodie took some time off, but is now looking forward to getting back into the salon and having some adult time.

Jodie will be working Fridays as of mid February. Let us know if you would like to make an appointment!
